The Elegance of Grand Hotels
I delighted in the elegance of grand hotels, historic lakeside villas, picturesque villages, and endless champagne.
My partner and I drove from Amsterdam to Lake Como because we wanted the freedom to explore as much as possible, and having a car made traveling around much easier. When we arrived, I was instantly captivated by the lake’s breathtaking beauty and peaceful atmosphere. The still waters, majestic mountains, and lush greenery created a sense of calm that was truly breathtaking. Every view felt like a scene from a postcard, and I knew this journey would be unforgettable.

Where to stay?
Passalacqua, Moltrasio
On our first full day, we visited Passalacqua for lunch. Upon arrival by car, we rang the bell at the gate, and the reception team opened it for us. Access is strictly limited, without a reservation, entry is not allowed. Passalacqua is, without question, one of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever seen. The gardens, the villa, the setting; every detail feels like a slice of paradise. We enjoyed a three-course lunch with stunning views over Lake Como. The service was exceptional and flawless.
Passalacqua was built in the 18th century during the Rococo period and was meant to celebrate the joys of Italian life: friendship, love, relaxation and culture. Today, the De Santis family, who have cared for the Lake Como area for generations, has turned it into a special hotel with 24 unique rooms. These rooms are in beautifully restored buildings surrounded by seven acres of gardens that lead down to a private jetty on the lake.
Guests can enjoy many relaxing experiences: a pool with amazing views, an outdoor gym in an olive grove, tennis courts by the lake, and outdoor movie nights under the stars. Everything is thoughtfully placed among the gardens, fountains, and old trees, creating a peaceful and luxurious atmosphere that captures the charm of Italian villa life.

Mandarin Oriental, Blevio
If you prefer contemporary design, the Mandarin Oriental might be the perfect choice for you. Upon arrival, guests are transported down the hill to the main property by golf cart, adding a touch of charm to the experience. Every corner of the resort is beautifully maintained, with thoughtful details that all come together seamlessly. The hotel offers several dining options, each set against stunning backdrops with views that are nothing short of spectacular. The service is exceptional, staff are attentive and genuinely welcoming. We truly enjoyed every moment.
Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como is a luxurious resort set on the eastern shore of Lake Como in the charming village of Blevio. Centered around the historic 19th-century Villa Roccabruna, the property features 75 elegant rooms, suites, and private villas surrounded by lush gardens. Many accommodations offer lake views, private terraces, and a tranquil atmosphere. Guests can relax in the floating infinity pool or unwind at the expansive spa, which includes thermal areas, treatment rooms, and a lakeview zen garden. Dining options range from fine Italian-Japanese fusion at L’ARIA to casual bites at the lakeside NAMI Café. With activities like yoga, hiking, water sports, and tailored wellness programs, the hotel offers a refined and peaceful Lake Como retreat.

Villa D’Este, Cernobbio
Step onto the property, and you’ll find it hard to ever leave. The boundless gardens, fragrant flowers, and breathtaking scenery make it feel like paradise. Villa d’Este, located in Cernobbio on the shores of Lake Como, is a historic treasure that blends Renaissance architecture with refined luxury. Built in 1568 as a residence for Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, it became a renowned hotel in 1873 and has since welcomed royalty, celebrities, and discerning travelers. The estate spans 25 acres of meticulously landscaped gardens, featuring statues, fountains, topiary, and the celebrated floating pool that seems to hover on the lake. Its 150+ guest rooms and suites occupy two historic buildings: the Cardinal Building and the Queen’s Pavilion. Dining options include the elegant Veranda restaurant overlooking the lake, the Grill in the gardens, and the lively Canova Bar, all offering cuisine in stunning settings. Villa d’Este also delivers exceptional service, with staff known for their long tenure and personalized attention, alongside world-class leisure facilities such as a spa, tennis courts, fitness center, and access to a nearby golf course.

Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Tremezzo
It is correct that it has the word ‘grand’ in the name as it is a huge eye catcher on the lake. We have visited Grand Hotel Tremezzo for different occasions, as lunch, dinner and for a drink in the evening. Grand Hotel Tremezzo is a historic five-star hotel located on the western shore of Lake Como. Established in 1910, it combines elegant Belle Époque architecture with modern luxury and comfort. The hotel offers 80 beautifully decorated rooms and suites, many with stunning lake or garden views. Guests can enjoy fine dining at restaurants like La Terrazza Gualtiero Marchesi and fresh seafood by the beach at Da Giacomo. The T-Spa features a wellness center with treatments, an indoor infinity pool, and an outdoor Jacuzzi overlooking the lake. With three pools, private beach access, tennis courts, and yoga classes, the hotel provides a perfect blend of relaxation and activity in a breathtaking setting.

Must-Visit Towns on Lake Como
Hop on a boat or ferry and visit Varenna, the most charming village along the lake. Enjoy a glass of champagne at Bar Il Molo, located right on the waterfront.
Hop on a ferry to Bellagio, often called the “Pearl of the Lake,” and stroll its romantic cobbled streets lined with boutique shops and elegant villas. Stop for a gelato or an aperitivo by the water, then wander through the peaceful gardens of Villa Melzi or hike up to the panoramic views near Villa Serbelloni.
Head to Como and explore the lake’s most vibrant town, where culture meets history. Visit the grand Duomo, browse stylish shops, and take the funicular up to Brunate for breathtaking views over the lake and mountains, especially magical at sunset.
Cruise into Cernobbio, one of the most refined villages on the lake, known for its timeless elegance and luxury. Enjoy lunch or dinner at a lakeside café.
What to do?
Lake Como is best enjoyed from the water, where the views are truly magical. Public ferries make it easy to travel between towns, and you can hop on and off all day with a single ticket. If you prefer something more organized, group boat tours leave from the main towns and include a guide who shares stories and history along the way. For more freedom, private boat tours are a great option. As you cruise along, look out for sights like the Varenna Cemetery on the hill, the old stone bridge in Nesso (Ponte della Civera), the beautiful Grand Hotel Tremezzo, and Villa Oleandra, George Clooney’s cream-colored villa hidden behind tall hedges in Laglio.
Some of the most important villas to visit on Lake Como include Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, famous for its art and gardens Villa del Balbianello in Lenno, known for its dramatic setting and appearances in movies like James Bond and Star Wars; Villa Melzi in Bellagio, surrounded by peaceful lakeside gardens; and Villa Monastero in Varenna, with a long botanical garden stretching along the shore.
